Justin Martyr

Justin Martyr (c. AD 100–165) was one of the earliest and most influential Christian apologists, a philosopher who devoted his life to proclaiming that Jesus Christ was the fulfilment of humanity’s search for truth and the promised Messiah revealed in the Scriptures. Born in Samaria and trained in the philosophical schools of the ancient world, Justin sought wisdom through Stoicism, Aristotelianism, Pythagoreanism, and Platonism before encountering Christianity, which he came to regard as the true philosophy given by God. In his First Apology, Second Apology, and Dialogue with Trypho, he defended Christians against accusations of atheism and immorality, explained the Christian worship of the early Church, and showed how the writings of the Hebrew prophets pointed towards Christ. He also gave one of the earliest surviving descriptions of the Eucharistic worship and baptismal practice of Christians in the second century. For refusing to deny Christ before Roman authorities, Justin was condemned and executed in Rome, earning the name “Martyr,” meaning “witness.” His writings remain a precious testimony to the apostolic faith, demonstrating the harmony of Christian revelation, reason, and the hope of resurrection.
